Planning a Private Boat Charter on the Sunshine Coast: How Your Celebration Comes Together
When someone enquires about a private boat charter on the Sunshine Coast with us, the first thing we ask isn’t the headcount. It’s “what are we celebrating?” A proposal at golden hour, a 60th with three generations aboard and an end-of-year work party are three very different afternoons, and Spray of the Coral Coast gets set up differently for each one. Here’s how a charter comes together the Saltwater way, with straight answers to the boat charter questions we hear most.
1. It starts with your story
Get in touch with your date, your rough numbers and what the day is for. We’ll confirm availability and talk through the details. Most private charters run for two hours, which is enough time for a cruise of the river, a sunset toast, speeches, dining and the cake. If your celebration calls for a little longer, ask when you enquire and we’ll talk through extending. You’ll come off that first call with a clear picture of the afternoon, and an itemised quote usually within a day.
2. Calm water, on purpose
A boat charter on the Sunshine Coast can mean open ocean, river or canals, and the three feel nothing alike. For a boat charter, Mooloolaba’s river and canals are sheltered on both sides, and that is why we cruise them. From The Wharf you’ll pass La Balsa Park, the waterfront homes and moored boats along the Mooloolah River, then open out towards the river mouth where the water meets the coastline. Calm water means grandparents, kids and anyone who is nervous about boats settle in without thinking about it, glasses stay upright through the speeches, and the sunset over the hinterland does the rest. If anyone in your group has mobility considerations, tell us when you book and we’ll plan boarding and seating around them.
3. Shaping the menu with our Saltwater kitchen
Nothing generic comes aboard. Our Saltwater galley prepares your menu in-house on the day, using local and seasonal ingredients wherever possible, so the food feels connected to the Sunshine Coast and to being on the water. Choose canapés, artisan grazing platters or substantial shared food built on local produce, seafood and native Australian ingredients, or ask about our Bushtucker-inspired flavours, with Davidson plum, lemon myrtle, finger lime and native herbs woven through the menu. Tell us about dietary requirements when you book and they’re covered. If there’s a cake, we’ll plate it and make it part of the celebration.
4. Choosing your musician, and your cocktails
The musicians who play our Sunset Cruises play private charters too. They’re the artists featured in our Sunset Sessions series, playing original songs and their own takes on covers. Tell us the mood and we’ll match the artist. If you’d rather run your own playlist, the onboard PA is yours.
Then there’s the glass in your hand. The bar is fully licensed and the cocktail list is built on Australian botanicals. Davidson plum, finger lime, lemon myrtle and pepperberry, mixed with locally distilled spirits. Set up a drinks tab, add champagne for the toast, and the crew takes care of the rest. Local beers, wines and non-alcoholic options are all on board.
5. Stepping aboard at The Wharf
On the day, your guests arrive at The Wharf Mooloolaba (123 Parkyn Parade), head to the marina entrance behind Spero restaurant and follow the jetty to the blue tower. The timber masts of Spray of the Coral Coast are hard to miss. Our crew welcomes everyone aboard with a drink, the musician is already tuning up, and from that moment the host of the day gets to be a guest at their own event. Our skipper looks after the water. We look after everyone on it.
The vessel is part of the celebration. Spray of the Coral Coast is a heritage-listed timber sailing vessel more than a century old, built to the plans of the Spray that Joshua Slocum sailed alone around the world, and recognised by the Australian National Maritime Museum in 2021. Above deck it’s open timber, rigging and water on all sides. Below deck there are modern amenities.
6. The moment
Every charter has one. The question at the bow as the sun touches the hinterland. The cake coming up from the galley to a cheer. Tell us when you want it to happen and the crew times everything else around it, the music softening, the photographer in position, the champagne already poured. We’ve run enough proposals, weddings and 60ths to know that the rest of the itinerary bends around that one minute.
7. How much does a private boat charter cost on the Sunshine Coast?
How much is a boat charter? Exclusive use of Spray of the Coral Coast starts from $1200 for two hours for up to 32 guests, fully skippered and crewed. Catering, drinks and live music are shaped to your celebration and quoted alongside, itemised from the start, so you can see the cost of each piece. Midweek and winter dates tend to have more availability.
8. If the weather turns
The sheltered waters of the Mooloolah River handle most conditions comfortably, and light rain rarely troubles a charter. We watch the forecast with you in the days leading up, and if conditions would make the day unsafe or unpleasant we’ll be in touch to reschedule or resolve your booking in line with our booking terms. You’ll always hear from us early, not at the jetty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is hiring a boat on the Sunshine Coast the same as a private charter?
Not quite. Self-drive hire puts you at the helm, which suits fishing trips and DIY afternoons. A private charter with Saltwater Eco Tours means the vessel, skipper, crew, kitchen and bar all come with it, so you’re hosting a celebration rather than driving a boat. If self-drive hire is what you’re after, we’re happy to point you in the right direction.
How far ahead should we book a private charter?
For warm-season weekends and any date near Christmas, a few weeks to a couple of months ahead is ideal, as sunset slots go first. Midweek and winter dates offer far more flexibility, sometimes at short notice. Proposals and weddings deserve the longest runway so every detail can be planned with you.
How long should our charter be?
Two hours is our standard private charter, and it fits most celebrations comfortably, with time to cruise the river, raise a toast, hear the speeches, eat and bring out the cake. If your plans need a little longer, mention it when you enquire and we’ll talk through extending.
Can kids and older guests come on a charter?
Yes, and multi-generation family celebrations are some of our favourites. The calm river cruising suits every age. Mention ages and any mobility considerations when you book so we can plan boarding and seating.
What should guests wear and bring?
Smart-casual with sensible shoes covers almost every charter. You’re stepping onto a timber deck, so heels and black-soled shoes are best left at home, while white-soled shoes are fine. Bring a light layer for after sunset, sunglasses and sunscreen for daytime cruises, and a camera. Our crew takes care of the rest.
