There’s something timeless about watching the sun slip below the horizon - especially when it’s paired with

live music, calm water, and a drink in hand

Our Sunset Cruise was designed with connection in mind - not just between people, but between

           intimate gig

Guests often tell us it feels like discovering a secret show - the kind you talk about long after the night ends.

Built From the Ground Up - Supporting Live Music Since COVID

Like so many in the arts community, live music was deeply impacted during COVID. Our Sunset Cruise became a way to

rebuild, support, and celebrate local talent

at a time when stages were disappearing.

What began as a small, hopeful idea has grown into a

           highly respected live music experience

, built on trust, consistency, and genuine support for artists.

Over time, the cruise has earned a strong reputation - one that musicians are proud to play, and guests return for again and again.

While the music is the soul of the experience, the atmosphere makes it perfect for date nights.

           No crowded restaurants.
No noisy bars.

           Just:

            Incredible cocktails

            Local, passionate and welcoming hospitality

Live music in an intimate setting

It’s romantic without being staged, relaxed without feeling ordinary - ideal for first dates, anniversaries, or simply sharing something special together.

When you join our Sunset Cruise, you’re not just enjoying a beautiful evening - you’re

           actively supporting live music

and the artists who bring it to life.

We’re proud to provide a space where musicians are respected, audiences are attentive, and the experience feels genuine.

It’s music as it should be heard — up close, unfiltered, and surrounded by nature.

One of the most unique elements of the Bushtucker Cruise is the vessel itself.

           Guests cruise aboard a

           118-year-old Huon Pine boat

, lovingly restored by Simon himself. Huon Pine is renowned for its beauty, durability, and deep connection to Tasmania’s maritime history, and stepping aboard feels like stepping into another era.

The vessel isn’t just transport - it’s part of the story. Its quiet glide across the water allows guests to truly absorb the surroundings, making the journey just as meaningful as the destination.

As we cruise, guests learn about the

           seasonal rhythms of the waterways

, how the environment changes throughout the year, and how these cycles influence local food sources.

Understanding when and why certain ingredients thrive adds depth to the experience, creating a stronger connection between what’s on your plate and what surrounds you.

that have been used for thousands of years. From coastal flavours to bush spices, every element is carefully chosen to reflect the land and waters we’re so proud of.

A deeper understanding of how food connects culture and country

Much of what you taste is

made from scratch by our crew

, from native-infused elements to house-made accompaniments. This hands-on approach allows us to honour ingredients properly and present them in a way that feels respectful, creative, and delicious.

An Experience for Visitors and Locals

One of the most rewarding parts of running the Bushtucker Cruise is seeing locals return time and time again.

For visitors, the experience offers insight into local culture, food systems, and ecosystems. For locals, it provides a fresh perspective on familiar landscapes - often revealing stories, flavours, or seasonal details they’ve never noticed before.

           Small Groups, Big Connection

We keep our cruises intentionally small, allowing space for:

            Conversation and questions

            Personal stories and shared moments

            A relaxed, unhurried pace

It’s not scripted and it’s never rushed - it’s about

           being present

            and experiencing the environment respectfully.

Why This Cruise Truly Stands Out

What makes our Bushtucker Cruise so special is the balance we strive to maintain:

            Education without being overwhelming

            Flavour without gimmicks

            Culture without commercialisation

It’s authentic, thoughtful, and deeply grounded in respect for

If you’re looking for an experience that feels genuine - one that nourishes curiosity as much as appetite - the Bushtucker Cruise offers a true taste of place.

            Planning a Sunshine Coast wedding?

First of all, excellent choice. Now let’s talk pre-wedding celebrations.

Whether you’re throwing a hen’s, a bucks, or going full HUCKS (we love a joint party moment), you deserve something more memorable than a bar tab and a group text.

           Ahoy!

Step aboard their beautifully restored 116-year-old sailing vessel and cruise the sparkling waterways of Mooloolaba with your favourite people. With tours and private charters made for celebrating, this is the vibe for couples who want to do something a little different. Think laid-back luxury, salty breezes, and the kind of experience your guests will talk about long after the last wedding toast.

But this isn’t just any boat party. Saltwater Eco Tours is proudly owned and operated by a local family (Simon and Jenna), and its tours are all about connection—to each other, to culture, and to Country.

Every charter is thoughtfully infused with local storytelling by Simon, bush-tucker flavours and a deep respect for the beautiful Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi sea country you’re sailing on.

           Come hungry – and thirsty!

There is a huge focus on sustainable, local produce, so you can expect grazing boards and bites that are not only delicious but thoughtfully curated with care for both people and planet. From juicy Mooloolaba King Prawns drizzled with bush tomato and bush lemon sauce, to fish tacos bursting with mango, Davidson Plum and pineapple, and flaky Bunya Nut pastries filled with Warrigal greens and river mint, Chef Skye’s creations are a true celebration of native flavours.

Your taste buds are in for an unforgettable ride!

Is there a licensed bar, I hear you ask? Absolutely — fully stocked with beer, wine, spirits, and a creative lineup of signature cocktails infused with native botanicals and sustainably sourced seasonal ingredients. Think Native Chilli Margaritas (with secret ingredient, Davidson Plum & Chilli sauce!) and signature Wattleseed Espresso Martini’s as the sun dips below the horizon. With resident bartender Kieran behind the bar whipping up creations that look almost too pretty to drink (almost!), you’ll be saying “Yes, please” before your first sip.

When you’re hosting a destination wedding on the coast, Saltwater Eco Tours is a brilliant way to welcome your guests before the big day — or wind down after it all with a cruise that feels more like a soul-nourishing celebration than a standard pre- or post-wedding catch-up.

So if you’re ready to kick off your wedding celebrations with a group outing that sets the tone and shows your guests a side of the Sunshine Coast they’ve likely never seen before, let Saltwater Eco Tours turn your special celebration into an unforgettable voyage.

p.s. You can even elope aboard with Saltwater Eco Tours. Imagine saying “I do” as the sun rises behind Point Cartwright, the sails full and the ocean calm — intimate, meaningful, and utterly unforgettable.

At Saltwater Eco Tours, we believe that eco-tourism is about much more than just showing you the beauty of our land and sea - it’s about preserving it for future generations. As a company, we are committed to protecting the natural environment, supporting Indigenous cultures, and promoting sustainability in everything we do.

Our tours are designed to give you an authentic, eco-friendly experience, all while respecting and caring for the country that we are so fortunate to call home.

           Respecting the Land and Sea

We are committed to ensuring our tours have as little environmental impact as possible. Our boat is equipped with a low-emission engine to reduce our carbon footprint, and we prioritise using locally sourced and foraged foods - eliminating food miles and choosing seasonal native ingredients as well as locally made beverages - many of which have their own sustainability initiatives. Additionally, we actively recycle plastic, paper, and aluminium to minimise waste and contribute to the sustainability of our region.

Our tours offer a profound connection to the land’s rich cultural heritage. We are honoured to have strong relationships with local elders, whose guidance shapes our offerings. Local elder Aunty Bridgette has led traditional ceremonies, tours and continues to share her knowledge of the area as our cultural facilitator. Through these cultural experiences, we ensure that the wisdom of the land is both honoured and preserved for future generations.

Supporting ReForest: Planting Trees for a Greener Future

Every ticket sold at Saltwater Eco Tours helps us plant trees in our forest in Cooroy on the Sunshine Coast, as part of our partnership with ReForest. This initiative plays a vital role in regenerating local ecosystems, promoting biodiversity, and combating climate change. We are proud to directly contribute to restoring the land, one tree at a time.

The Power of Oysters: Revitalizing the Mooloolah River

On our Bushtucker Cruise, we’re proud to serve oysters as one of our signature canapés. These delicious superfoods are not just a treat for the tastebuds, but they’re also packed with benefits, both for us and for the environment. What’s even more exciting is how we’re incorporating sustainable practices into this experience, contributing to the health of our local waterways.

Oysters: A Superfood with Super Powers

Oysters are more than just a tasty snack; they’re powerhouse filter feeders that play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem. By filtering water as they feed, oysters help remove excess nutrients, sediment, and pollutants, which can otherwise lead to algal blooms and poor water quality. In short, they keep our rivers and oceans healthy and vibrant.

           Repurposing for a Greener Future

After we’ve served up these delectable oysters, we don’t just discard the shells. Instead, we clean and dry them in the sun, preparing them for a second life. We’re working in collaboration with Unity College on a project aimed at rehabilitating the Mooloolah River. The students are building robust oyster baskets using our oyster shells, designed to promote the growth of new oyster colonies right here in the river.

These baskets will provide a sustainable environment for baby oysters to settle and grow, giving them a head start in establishing a thriving community of filter feeders. The more oysters we have, the better the water quality, and the healthier the entire ecosystem becomes.

In November 2024 we began collaborating with Skye Staniford, Creative Director at Golden Virtues Catering & Events to enhance the menu for our signature Bushtucker Cruise.

A nod to the talented chefs who had previously worked onboard, we decided to elevate the existing seasonal, multi-course, mostly pescatarian tasting menu.

Months of research & development ensued, as did many fascinating conversations with local suppliers, farmers and fishmongers.

I’d return from long bushwalks with baskets of Bark, Leaves and Flora. Simon would give me bags of Bunya Nut, Satin Ash, Lillypilly and Pigface he’d foraged from along the coastline, to experiment with.

I pickled and simmered, chopped and stirred, plucked and ground these beautiful ingredients for weeks. There were bushels of vibrant, aromatic Lemon Myrtle drying in the sunshine and a galaxy of sliced Fingerlime and brilliant Blue Quandong shavings dehydrating every night. It was an exciting time.

Simon and Jenna would invite me to their home where we would taste every new development and talk about ways we could incorporate them into a shared vision, late into the night.

A pivotal moment occurred when our whole team visited Aunty Dale Chapman at her place ‘My Dilly Bag’ in Forest Glen. She talked to us about the origins, medicinal and cultural significance of every plant and we tasted a selection of her divine spice blends, syrups and relishes.

Her knowledge has informed our new menu with the aim of making each ingredient shine through thoughtful pairings with a focus on sustainability, cultural respect for the land and waters of this beautiful country and gratitude for the bounty it provides.

We have fine-tuned each dish to include over 25 key native ingredients such as Pigface Fruit, Leaves & Flowers, Saltbush, Lomandra, Macadamia, Melaleuca, Wattleseed, Grevillea, Anise Myrtle and Warragal Greens.

We also developed a separate menu, allowing people with alternate dietary preferences to enjoy the same flavours, using plant-based ingredients.

Whether it’s in one of our signature sauces, a floral garnish or a styling element on the plate, every course is a sum of its parts where these singular and utterly unique flavours can be discovered, experienced and enjoyed by our guests.

Adam-James is a Coastal-Folk singer/songwriter from the Sunshine Coast. He creates fast folky sounds which blend with soft rock elements that shine in his live performances.

After appearing on the 2024 season of Australian Idol, and with a second national tour under his belt, Adam’s captivating live performance will have you dreaming of road trips and days by the ocean with someone you love.

Adam has been playing on Saltwater Eco Tours for over two years and as our featured musician for December, we sat down with him to discover his music journey and how he impacts people through his beautiful lyrics. Here's what he said...

Adam, Tell us about your music journey. How did your love of music start, what drew you to music?

I started playing guitar at university in 2018 when I was stuck in a flood in Townsville. I had nothing to do but teach myself to play an old decorative guitar that was hanging on the wall in an Airbnb. Little did I know that learning the guitar would see me drop out of my marine science and zoology degree and travel around Australia twice playing shows in almost every state.

Tell us about your sound, how would you describe your music?

I make Indie folk/Coastal folk music which is heavily inspired by my travels around Australia, as well as falling in and out of love in with the complexities of navigating relationships, not only with other people but with myself too. Most of my songs are upbeat and super happy which always gets people dancing and I also play the harmonica so it's great fun.

When you create music, what impact do you hope to have?

My music is about chapters of my life and I wear my heart on my sleeve in my songwriting, so if people can resonate with that I think that’s awesome to be honest. Some of my new songs touch on men's mental health and not being afraid to speak your feelings so I think that will impact a lot of people in a positive way. Ultimately, I’m an entertainer and I love putting on live shows, so I’d love to see people coming to my shows singing songs and dancing the night away. That to me is the most fun!

What do you enjoy about playing a gig on the Sunshine Coast?

I’ve played gigs and shows all over Australia and the Sunshine Coast always feels like home wherever the venue. Whether I’m playing in the local pub, on a boat or putting on a headline show in a larger venue, the Sunny Coast community is always warm & welcoming which is so valued as a musician. I think the fact that we live by the ocean here, people really resonate with my music in particular, and I find my following grows with every gig I play. I love to see people who have seen me at cover gigs turning up and watching me play shows - I think it’s awesome that people get behind local artists in that way.

What music or musicians influence you?

Originally I was influenced by a lot of Indie rock bands such a Sticky Fingers, Bootleg Rascal and The Skeggs, however as I have developed my artistry and started to carve my own path, more independent artist like The Dreggs, Jack Botts and Ziggy Alberts have really inspired my sound and my songwriting methods. Recently The Dreggs have been a huge influence and I have been lucky enough to record my new EP (releasing in January) with Zane Harris, their lead guitarist.

What do you love about being a musician?

Music has allowed me to travel around Australia and some parts of Europe. The freedom that this job gives me is just insane. I love that I have found a purpose from music and that I can literally form an entirely new community around the songs I write and the shows I put on. I have met some of the best people the world has to offer through music and I don’t see myself stopping any time soon.

What does culture mean to you?

I love this word. There are so many different cultures within Australia itself that have been formed over 1000's of years which is so amazing. I see music as a way for me to create my own culture around the following that I have and continue to grow. I’d like to think that I create a culture of 'come as you are' in the sense that I hope everybody knows that no matter what you look like or however you want to identify, you’re always welcome at an Adam-James show and that inclusive culture is one that I want to continue to grow and spread as far and wide as I can.

Sunset Sessions - Meet musician Lilli Fairfax

Lilli Fairfax is an upcoming artist in the world of country/folk/pop music. Hailing from the small town of Maitland, NSW, and now calling the Sunshine Coast, QLD home, Lilli is a singer-songwriter whose music radiates with the warmth of her coastal lifestyle and her country town roots.

As our featured musician for November, we sat down with Lilli to discover her music journey and how she impacts people through her beautiful lyrics. Here's what she said...

Lilli, Tell us about your music journey. How did your love of music start, what drew you to music?

I grew up with music playing in our household 24/7 and playing Singstar with my sister when I was really young. But I think the real music journey began when I was 12 and I got gifted a guitar for my birthday. I sat on my bed for hours after school everyday teaching myself how to play so I could start busking at local markets of a weekend. I did this for a few years during my teens but then slowly lost my passion for performing.

I’d pick up my guitar every now and then but it definitely wasn’t an everyday thing. A couple of years ago when I was 23, I began going to open mics in Newcastle at a place called The Rogue Scholar and I was instantly inspired by all the amazing musicians. My love for music was reborn when I realised I could bring others joy through my voice.

Tell us about your sound, how would you describe your music?

My sound I would say is predominantly country with a mix of folk and pop. I love telling stories through my songs and I believe my love for most genres can be heard through my music.

When you create music, what impact do you hope to have?

Through creating music, I aim to inspire others to embark on their own transformations and follow their hearts to make the most out of this beautiful life we’ve been gifted.

What do you enjoy about playing a gig on the Sunshine Coast?

I love the Sunshine Coast community! I’ve only been here for just over a year but I now happily call the Coast home. There are lots of venues supporting local musicians and the audience are always engaging. I love playing chill gigs at cafes and then changing it up to playing party tunes to drunk people for a late night bar or pub gig! There’s lots of variety on the coast which is what I enjoy the most.

What music or musicians influence you?

I have many musical influences but my top favourites are Missy Higgins, Alanis Morissette, Miley Cyrus, Kyle Lionhart and Lainey Wilson.

What do you love about being a musician?

I love the freedom to travel whilst also working, although it doesn’t feel like work most of the time. I love the connections and friends I make through music and performing and when people are moved and impacted from my original songs.

I love the lifestyle I’m able to live as a musician and having the time for my other hobbies and passions eg. yoga and surfing. These activities provide the balance of flow and stillness which I believe is so important as a musician to incorporate into my daily routine as it allows even more room for inspiration to come in.

What does culture mean to you?

To me culture means coming together as a community to share with one another our passions and talents and most importantly, our love.

           Instrument: Acoustic guitar

           Drink: Cacao with coconut milk

Food: This is so hard to choose a favourite but for now I’ll say a good steak and roasted veggies

Song: Also very hard to choose one song. One of my favourites at the moment is ‘Don’t Forget Me’ - Maggie Rogers

Place: Northern Rivers and the Sunny Coast

“I booked on with Saltwater Ecotours for the sunset sail with live music and had a fantastic experience. From the second you walk onboard you are greeted with a complementary drink and get to feast your eyes on the beauty of this classic sailboat. As the tour started Simon, the captain, gave an insightful history of the vessel and acknowledgement of the land we ventured on. The music was lovely, food was tasty, sights were gorgeous, and overall it was a perfect way to spend a Friday night! Also-checkout the Eco Tours shop in the wharf after for the local ingredients used in the drinks and stunning art pieces by First Nations artists. I'm keen to checkout their other tours as well!”

Lap slide guitarist and folksy crooner Pat Tierney will again bring his unique sound to the Sunshine Coast live music scene with a sunset session aboard

As our featured musician for December, we sat down with Pat to find out what inspires his music, how he creates his inimitable sound, and what playing on the Sunshine Coast means to him. Here’s what he said:

Pat, tell us about your music journey. How did your love of music start, what drew you to music?

My music journey started around the age of 15 but It had always been a big part of my family and family gatherings , there’d always be a jam session happening most holidays or weekends with friends, cousins, uncles & aunties and whoever was around.

We also had lots of instruments in the house, guitars, mandolin, piano, so I naturally just began to gravitate towards wanting to learn an instrument.

I was mostly into punk & rock music at that point, and was just starting to learn guitar when I attended a Byron Bay Bluesfest — I had always been surrounded by folk and blues music, but my world kind of flipped after that, seeing it on the big stages and in the flesh as a teenager.

It just hit me straight in the heart and I went home and decided I wanted to be a musician from that day on, and write songs.

Tell us about your sound, how would you describe your music?

I’d probably say it’s folk music at its core and then branches into some blues, roots and even soul.

The slide guitar plays a big role in my sound as well, and is often the driver of my music.

I’m really open to a lot of genres, and it’s exciting to let all the different musical styles wash over and filter into my own music.

When you create music, what impact do you hope to have?

I want to inspire and move people the way I have been through music.

When people listen to my music I hope they get a sense of belonging and comfort. It’s a very therapeutic and organic process for me, and I’m really grateful to have that expressive outlet.

What do you enjoy about playing a gig on the Sunshine Coast?

It’s a great community, always very supportive and some really lovely venues and people pushing to highlight local artists.

I grew up in a little town called Woolgoolga on the mid-north coast of NSW — beautiful and inspiring place, a great place to grow up. I’ve been on the Sunshine Coast now for around 3 years, so it’s definitely starting to feel like home.

What music or musicians influence you?

Folk, Blues & Reggae are probably my 3 most loved genres. So people like Bob Dylan, Ben Harper, Bob Marley & Harry Manx have definitely shaped who I am as a musician, guitarist & songwriter.

What do you love about being a musician?

For me, it’s the expressive outlet of writing, performing and releasing music. It connects me to something bigger and allows me to say what my soul is needing to say.

This proud Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi Country woman is detailing her long family history to this part of the Sunshine Coast, or as she calls it “my grandmother’s, grandmother’s, grandmother’s country”.

Sitting on the historic 115-year-old Spray of the Coral Coast sailing ship, it is hard to imagine what life was like back in the day as we putter around the million dollar homes of the uber wealthy. Giant ostentatious villas and mansions glisten in the unusually hot winter’s day, as we mere mortals onboard critique the styling choices of those with a bit of coin: “too many pillars”, “the pool looks too small”, “what were they thinking with that roof?”

Davis admits her ancestors would probably be “mourning” at what the land around Mooloolaba has become, but she says she has “evolved” herself with all the changes in the area. Aunty Bridgette Chilly Davis holding court.

This once rough-around-the-edges Sunshine Coast coastal town has undergone a significant glow-up. Fancy restaurants and a bustling wharf have brought a new energy to the area.

But with all the progress, it is important to remember what came before, and what should come in the future.

Saltwater Eco Tours is pretty hard to miss on the river, standing out among the leisure cruisers and fishing vessels. At 58 feet (17.6m), the huon pine sailing ship built in 1908 is modelled after the vessel Joshua Slocum used to become the first to solo circumnavigate the globe.

Lovingly-restored and now owned by Simon Thornalley of Torres Strait Island descent, the tours offer a range of authentic experiences from traditional music to bushtucker feeds, all steeped in the culture of the land.

Saltwater Eco Tours is pretty hard to miss on the river. For storyteller Davis, it is a chance to connect with people while telling her history. “We are the oldest family still on the Sunshine Coast. The reason why is because of a pioneering Westaway family. They wrote to the Chief Protector of Aborigines back in the day,” said Davis, chuckling at the “fancy title”.

“He could say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the removal of Aboriginal people from their native land. He actually approved for my family to stay here because they were employed with the Westaway family. We got all these exemption cards so we could stay here whereas others got forcibly removed.”

The tales range from the importance and significance of the river and the trees, to the reasons behind smoking ceremonies and ochre, all accompanied by platters of entrées, as well as cocktails and champagne.

Looking to the future, Davis hopes for a cultural centre to be built for more opportunities to tell the stories of her ancestors. As we leave the ship, she reminds us all the overriding philosophy of her heritage: “Whatever you take from Mother Earth, you’ve always got to give back.”

Saltwater Eco Tours have grown in leaps and bounds since they officially set sail three years ago.

Launching amidst a global pandemic that flipped the tourism industry on its head, Jenna says “It was very risky. “We thought who knows what’s going to happen with the tourism market on the Sunshine Coast but we’ve got to give it a go.”

First a family affair, they’ve strategically added to the team, which is now eight strong—including a cultural tour guide, Aunty Bridgette, and more recently a fully qualified chef—and have firmly established their place as a trailblazer in cultural tourism not just on the Sunshine Coast but Australia-wide.

AS BRIDGETTE CHILLI DAVIS takes her place at the bow of the Spray of the Coral Coast her eyes start to roam the sky and drift over the water. The Gubbi Gubbi (Kabi Kabi) Elder has a gentle presence and, as she talks, it’s as if she has taken a pencil to the sky, drafting a sketch of the serpentine Mooloolah River in Mooloolaba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, with no detail overlooked. After a moving ‘Welcome to Country’, the bow of the boat becomes a stage for Bridgette, whose stories slip in and out of the past and present.

“I identify as a Murulla Kabi Kabi First People and Country Jhdungah Sunshine Coast woman and Elder. Our totem is the river porpoise and our people have a physical, mythical and spiritual connection to Country,” says Bridgette.

“My connection to Country binds us to the spirit of our ancestral beings. This is our identity. It’s who we are as Murulla Saltwater people: shellfish eaters, canoe makers, medicine women, rainmakers and lore men and women. This is matrilineal women’s country – knowledge holders of our grandmother country – and the Murulla [Mooloolah] River is our ancient songline to Country. We have a connection to this river system all the way along it with sacred, significant sites, watering holes, birthing sites, burial sites and marriage sites,” she says, her palms outstretched. As a Traditional Owner of the land, Bridgette has been engaged by Saltwater Eco Tours’ Indigenous founder, Simon Thornalley, to tell her story to the guests onboard the boat as it whispers its way upriver. As everyone on deck absorbs Bridgette’s stories about the green sea turtles and her ancestors who protect the coastline, skipper Simon navigates his way through the calm channels of the serpentine river. Simon is a proud Indigenous man with Torres Strait Islander heritage and flags representing both nations have been hoisted onto the sails of the 58ft ketch.

While motoring back to the wharf, we see toddlers on the shore wearing loose hats, teens roaring past in tinnies and a fisho with a whiskery moustache who mouths ‘g’day’ as we pass. The river is as steely as a piece of burnished metal when an eagle ray leaps out of the water, reminding us that everything here is part of Indigenous identity. “That eagle ray reminds us to look at this area through a cultural lens that starts with the respect Indigenous people have always had for caring for Country,” says Simon.

His parents, Su and Stephan, provided the ultimate adventure-filled childhood, sailing up and down the QLD East Coast, Island hopping and immersing themselves in the land and sea.

This, combined with Simon’s seafaring ancestral history and Indigenous heritage from the Torres Straits cemented his love for a life on the ocean. The young boys were well- known to other boat owners along the East-coast, as their sun-bleached hair could be seen bopping up and down, amusing themselves on deck. The “good old days on Stephan Davies”, his parents still say as they flick through old photos…

In 2018, after returning from 6-months in Antarctica and two years in Canada, Simon was invited to join his family friends and the next owners of Stephan Davies for a casual Sunday sail off Mooloolaba. He was taken back in time as they started up the gardener engine and headed out the Mooloolah river towards Mudjimba Island. It was soon after this experience that Simon began his extensive journey to find his own unique timber sailing vessel.

Two challenging years of building a business model, long days developing tourism concepts as well as inspecting potential vessels, before the slap-in-the-face Covid, Saltwater Eco Tours was finally ready to launch mid-2020. Simon and his partner Jenna began welcoming passengers on their Mooloolaba based tours, while navigating new restrictions and policies that would not have existed if they had begun operating a mere 6 months prior.

During the lead up of launching, Simon was faced with various hurdles. Not only was he creating a company from the ground up, but he also had to find the right vessel, the one that aligned with his vision of authenticity and the one that would set them apart from other operators. After flying to Melbourne, Tasmania, and Cairns to view potential vessels, Simon kept coming back to one that was moored just 5 minutes from his own home.

Simon’s vision for Saltwater Eco Tours was to provide a tourism experience where people were able to learn about local Indigenous Culture through the art of storytelling, music, and delicious native foods. He worked hard to build relationships and partnerships with local Traditional Owners of the Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi region to create an authentic tourism product allowing passengers to experience and learn about local culture and history.

Tours took off immediately, as the local and surrounding South East Queensland community were seeking new adventures within the boundaries of domestic travel. In hindsight, the everchanging restrictions through out 20/21 allowed Simon and Jenna to further find their feet and develop as a new company, with the target market focusing on locals as opposed to international travellers. Through Simon’s endless hard work and unique business concept, came a variety of incredible opportunities that has seen him be a voice within the growing industry.

Saltwater Eco Tours offers unique Indigenous tourism experience via historical timber vessel

Queensland’s Sunshine Coast welcomes a new tourism experience which sees travellers take to the sea with Saltwater Eco Tours to learn about the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Launched during Queensland’s Year of Indigenous Tourism, Saltwater Eco Tours operates out of Mooloolaba, taking passengers aboard a century-old historic timber sailing vessel, Spray of the Coral Coast. The tour hosts local Indigenous storytellers who share stories, traditions and culture of the Kabi Kabi people of the Sunshine Coast.

Saltwater Eco Tours is founded by Torres Strait Islander man, Simon Thornalley. From a young age, Thornalley has had a strong relationship with the ocean.

“I grew up on an ex-mission boat that was from Thursday Island, very similar to the boat we are using now, and I guess that’s where the inspiration has come from. My Dad is a timber boat builder, both Mum and Dad spent most of their lives sailing around the world,” he said.

Thornalley’s family travelled up and down the Queensland coast until he turned six, when the family settled in Moolooaba. Thornalley later became a commercial diver, which enabled him to travel internationally.

“All of my experience I’ve had on the water as well as my passion for Indigenous culture, that is where the business model grew from,” he said.

Saltwater Eco Tours is unlike other tourism experiences operating along the coast.

“The Indigenous cultural experience is the number one [priority], that is really what I wanted to encompass in the experience … an authentic local Indigenous experience,” Thornalley said.

“Although there is a lot of Indigenous experiences all over Australia, we wanted something that was on the water, that reflected the culture from this area.”

“You could look back on the land, back on the mountain ranges and hear those creation stories told by the local Indigenous people. And in combination with that, the vessel we have is 112 years-old so just being on that timber boat gives you the presence of history.”

Spray of the Coral Coast is a restored classic 58 foot gaff-rigged, Huon-pine ketch. Its design is based upon Spray, the boat in which Joshua Slocum became the first person to circumnavigate the globe in the late 19th century.

Saltwater Eco Tours offers a series of tours, including the Cultural Tour, Sunset Acoustic Tour and Private Charters.

“There’s more demand than ever for authentic ecotourism and Indigenous cultural experiences in Queensland,” said Queensland Tourism Minister, Kate Jones.

“COVID-19 has had a huge impact on our tourism industry. We need new experiences like Saltwater Eco Tours to entice visitors back to the Sunny Coast and share the message that we’re ‘Good to Go in Queensland’.”

Although only in its early stages, Thornalley hopes the business can expand in the coming years.

“I want to be more established within the tourism community, I want to create bigger and more exciting trips. I want to go further, be able to do full day trips, two day trips and move on from here and build that experience; build that reputation of an authentic, traditional sailing experience.”

The Palaszczuk Government has today announced 10 Indigenous Young Tourism Leaders to champion their industry and culture in 2020 – the year of Queensland Indigenous Tourism.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said she was proud to announce the first Indigenous cohort of Young Tourism Leaders.

“More tourists than ever before are looking for a cultural experience when they come to Queensland,” she said.

“Cultural tourism is a multi-billion-dollar global industry. We’re working with Indigenous tourism operators from throughout the state to make sure Queenslanders tap into this rapidly-growing sector.

“Building Queensland’s reputation as the capital for Indigenous tourism is a priority. That’s why the Premier named 2020 the Year of Indigenous Tourism.”

Ms Jones said tourism was vital to Queensland, pumping $27 billion into the economy and supporting 236,000 jobs.

“By providing influential and inspiring role models through the Young Tourism Leaders program, we’re aiming to encourage young people to stay and progress in the tourism industry,” she said.

“Young Tourism Leaders are advocates for the industry. They engage with school and college students throughout Queensland around the opportunities a career in tourism can offer.

“The program is all about showcasing to our participants that the industry is diverse, exciting and opens doors to other opportunities.”

Ms Jones said the Young Tourism Leaders program started in 2017 had so far engaged more than 7000 students across the state.

She said this group of 10 Indigenous Young Tourism Leaders were from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Bundaberg and Cairns. They’ll join 33 existing 33 Young Tourism Leaders across the state.

William Enoch Tranby, a former Young Tourism Leader, was today announced as a mentor for this cohort of Indigenous Young Tourism Leaders.

Mr Enoch Tranby said the YTL program enabled him to connect with current tourism leaders and to inspire the next tourism leaders.

“I hope the next YTL group will absorb each other’s experiences and work as a collective for the benefit of the industry and to have an impact on the next generation,” he said.

The 10 Indigenous Inductees are:
